South Yorkshire’s air quality champions recently enjoyed a glitzy night out at the second annual Care4Air Awards, held at Kenwood Hall, Sheffield. The ceremony, organised by diva* creative, was attended by over 80 guests who were treated to a drinks reception and music from a classical string quartet, followed by a three-course formal dinner.
The Care4Air awards recognise individuals and organisations who have gone that extra mile to improve the region’s air quality. 34 nominees were shortlisted this year and ITV weatherman, Jon Mitchell, made a guest appearance to compere the event.
In the Individual Award category, Fred Priestley, 90, took the top prize to celebrate his inspirational and committed use of public transport. Sheffield-based company, Chesterfield Special Cylinders, won the Business Award for their development of compressed biomethane – a fuel that has no negative effects on the environment.
The Community Award went to Bikeability Barnsley for their training courses which teach children to cycle to school rather than using the car. Brinsworth Comprehensive School in Rotherham won the Education Award for fitting solar panels, monitoring diffusion tubes and analysing air quality data.
The prestigious prize for Outstanding Contribution to Improving Air Quality went to Neil Parry from the East End Quality of Life Initiative. Neil was chosen for his dedicated work monitoring air quality over the past 11 years.
